THE ISSUE:

Colombia has been entrenched in over 60 years of conflict between armed guerrilla groups, paramilitaries, and the government, which has led to mass displacement, inequality, violence and loss of social services, among many other issues. In 2016, Colombia signed a peace treaty with one of the main guerrilla forces, allowing the country and its people to enter a new era towards post-conflict, with new development policies and a shift in thinking. One of the priorities in this post-conflict era is educating youth about leadership, human rights, and how to construct peace and harmony in their communities.

Local Projects:

We partner with a project that prepares and presents educational workshops, specifically aimed for youth of displaced Colombians. The workshops focus on human rights, peace building, and leadership, and are held in several surrounding towns outside of Cartagena.

Possible Volunteer or Intern Responsibilities:

  • Assist in peace and human rights curriculum development.

  • Create and lead activities that promote positive values and leadership.

  • Participate in educational workshops and additional related activities.

  • Teach English or support English related activities.

  • Photograph, record, and document the project and its activities.
